How to share Discord videos so members can play and revisit them

If file size is stopping you from sending a video, start with what to do when a Discord video is too large. For other upload failures, use the Discord upload checklist.

Once the video is sent, check that members can play it and find it again when they need it.

Confirm that recipients can play the video

For a video attached directly to Discord: the file format and the video codec are different things. MP4 is a container; the codec describes how the video inside it is encoded. Discord's File Attachments FAQ lists MP4 video encoded with:

• H264
• HEVC/H265
• AV1

The extension alone does not tell you whether a recipient can play the video. The FAQ does not establish audio-codec support or playback results for each device. No real-device playback tests were performed for this guide.

For a video opened on an external sharing page: check that page's access requirements and player using the recipient's account. Discord's attachment specifications do not guarantee playback there.

1. Open the sent attachment or link. Ask a recipient to open it from your Discord message.
2. Check access. Confirm they can complete any required sign-in and have viewing permission. For a members-only page, use their own member account.
3. Play the picture and sound. Confirm the video moves, then check that its expected audio can be heard. A visible thumbnail alone is not a playback check.
4. Compare another device if needed. If playback differs, note which device and app or browser you used. A result applies to that file and environment.

Make videos easy to find again

1. Leave useful search clues. Use a filename such as 2026-09-14-community-qa-highlights.mp4 so the date and event are clear, along with the content. Include the event name and purpose in the Discord message too—for example, “Community Q&A highlights for next week's recap.”
2. Search for the original message. Open search in the server or DM where you shared the video and enter the event name or purpose. Choose the channel, then narrow the date range. Use content-type filters for files or links, and open the matching message. Discord's search guide explains these filters and their desktop/mobile differences.
3. Keep the current link clear. If you move the video to another sharing page, edit your original Discord message to replace the old link. Ask a recipient to reopen it and check access, then replay the picture and sound.
